History of the Danish heart:
The woven heart is a traditional decoration on the Danish Christmas tree. It is said that the original julehjerte was crafted by Danish author Hans Christian Andersen. The oldest preserved heart dates back to 1860 and is on exhibit at the HC Andersen museum in Odense, Denmark.
Personal History: I hold close to my heart the memory of making these woven paper hearts with my MorMor when I was little. We hung them on the tree, the wooden cabinet handles, in levels above the fireplace, anywhere we could reach. The fragile paper was lightweight, almost floating on the tree branches. The Danish colors echoed throughout the home, and in the Julenissen hidden playfully on the shelves. When I think of my Mormor, her deep connection to her Danish roots and community, she inspires me to hold my friends close, build my personal community, and wear my heart on my sleeve.
